What are the skills you can earn as a promoter?

Do you ever ponder on above questions?

Or is it just simply work for the money?

1. Problem-Solving Skills

As dealing with customers, we cannot move away from solving its problem. There will be a lot of trouble that is going to be thrown just to your face. Some people asking why the product is not working, some of them complaint on the cooperativeness level of the third party, some of them don’t even know how to use it properly.

The most interesting case is that you were being mistaken as the ‘customer service counter’ and they will just scold or confess to you about the shopping mall facilities or even toilet, etc.  As the promoter, what you can do is to identify the problem to their story and solved or direct it to the respective person in charge (if it is not in the scope of your responsibility)

2. Communication Skills

There is a need to speak clearly and deliver the details of your product in a correct way. As different people has different type of understanding and interpretation level. Simple instructions could take quite a lot of time for certain people to understand on (if we cannot transfer the message effectively).

For instance: ‘minimun 7 characters of alphanumeric for password set up’ as the instruction. We often found those people that keep repeating the same mistakes, as either they give all number or in a word only (instead of the combination between it) or  the character is less than 7 (they thought 7 is the maximum).

Above condition happens either caused by the lack of understanding from the audience or the lack of explanation from ourselves. However we couldn’t blame on the audience as this is our job to deliver the message clearly without biasness.

3. Linguistic Skills

Promoter need to be able to speak accordingly toward the different type of languages. Most common type of language will be used are Bahasa, English, Cantonese and Mandarin. However there is still a lot of local dialect that you might not even understand at the moment you heard from them. Believe me the number of languages you can speak will determined the number of the product or signed up you could gain. If you feel, you are not able to speak either 2 of it, this is the time for you to learn more!

As one of my collegian is able to speak Cantonese, the moment he  shout in Cantonese, people who has ignored me at first suddenly turned out their back and asking about our products. Yeah, I am not lying, but this is true. There is a possibility that the customer doesn’t even understand on what am I talking about, therefore they would like to just pass by without even response to me.

4. Interpersonal Skills

The moment you work as a promoter, it is the same thing as you promote yourself publicly. Therefore self-image is created by the moment people have their first impression on you, people perceive us through the behaviour and attitude.

At the same time you will meet different type of people and adapt ourselves to interact with them properly. Sometimes they could be approachable, competitive on the work, unmotivated, playful, and many others characteristics. Through this interaction with the outsider (refer to customer and collegian), they will share to us their story and it clearly dismissed in judging people through its appearance and we indirectly learn something that we might not experience it in the classroom.

Sometimes if you are lucky enough, there is something called ‘opportunity’ which is coming from the employer or a start-up that is currently looking for new employee. Exchange name card often happen and that’s why it can be served as the networking moment too. (*bring your name card too if you have any)

Due to the repetition in the content of promoting the product, it will become more and more comfortable with the script and sometimes we can combine with our own style while promoting based on the customer’s preference. Last word will “boost up your confidence and develop your own style!”
